A man was critically ill in hospital today after a three-vehicle collision led to him being thrown through a side window of his car.

Leslie Grayson, of Beaverdyke, Clifton, York, was rushed to York District Hospital after his Peugeot car was hit from behind and sent spinning across the A19 north of Skelton. The accident left the main road closed for more than 45 minutes shortly before 1pm yesterday. Another man and a woman involved were described as walking wounded.
Inspector Paul Bilton said the Peugeot had been turning right from the north bound carriageway into a lay-by when it was hit from behind. It was pushed into the path of a car heading south.
Meanwhile, a woman was killed when her car left the road and hit a tree outside an East Yorkshire village.
Margaret Hopkins, aged 37, of Belby, near Goole, was killed when the silver Vauxhall Cavalier she was driving crashed in Beverley Road, half a mile from the village of South Cave.
Police traffic officers are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened some time between 9.30am and 11.10am yesterday, to contact them on 01482 597705.
