Like the Labour Government, York's Labour-run council stands accused of excessive interference. In this case it is over the authority's plan to ban car-owners from new city homes.
If the proposal is agreed, tenants applying to move into the Lawrence Street development would be blackballed if they owned a car.
We must hope that such a ham-fisted attempt at social engineering will be withdrawn. It is unfair and unworkable. The council should invest its energies into making public transport so efficient that people give up their cars voluntarily
