A teenage girl has died on the A1237 York outer ring road after being in collision with one or more cars.
Lizzie Gilmour, 15, and from the Acomb area, was killed on Saturday at about 8.20pm near the junction with Askham Lane. Police confirmed her identity this afternoon.
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the girl suffered head injuries.
John Thompson, head teacher of Lowfield School, where Lizzie was a pupil, said staff and pupils were devastated by the loss.
He said: "The first thing we would like to do is offer our condolences and sympathies to her family.
"I've had a meeting with an uncle and aunt today and have also been in touch with her parents.
"Lizzie was a very popular student. She was very lively with lots of friends and took part in lots of activities, particularly music, drama and dance.
"She will be a great loss to the school as well as to her friends."
Mr Thompson said bereavement counsellors had been called in to help pupils who knew Lizzie deal with their grief.
An inquest will be formally opened and adjourned tomorrow.
