I am disappointed by the City of York Council's plan to close swimming pools in York.
I use the Barbican pool most weeks and have done so for the past ten years.
Regular swimming is one of the activities I recommend to patients of all ages and it is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed at almost any age.
When I swim there are frequently babies with their parents, some regulars that I see every week ploughing up and down like me, lots of families in the holidays, and senior citizens, one of which I hope to be one day so that I can get to the pool more regularly than at present.
However my chance of getting to any pool looks likely to be severely restricted if the cost-cutting plans of the council go ahead and they close the pools in York.
The swimming pools are a service to the community, like libraries, museums and parks.
Are we to be governed by accountants who cannot see beyond 'the bottom line'?
