Evening Press Readers Letters

Is the City of York Council really so hard up that the council has to sell off the Lord Mayor's car number plate ('Closures and fees in search for cuts', January 5)?

Perhaps we should be sending them the shirts off our backs.

The significance of the plate DN1 goes back to the days when York and surrounding area were issued with the letters DN and VY from the Ministry of Transport.

If memory serves me right DN1 belonged to a private car owner who bequeathed the number plate to the City of York.

I don't know. We can't afford decent swimming pools and leisure facilities for our young citizens, clean streets or a car number plate. Excuse me while I pass the begging bowl.

...ONCE again Coun Hills is threatening the citizens of York with reduced services and more stupidly selling off the registration number of the civic car.

Why is he doing this? I will tell you why - he and his cohorts cannot balance the books.

So instead of cutting or reducing front line services (libraries, swimming pools etc) and therefore the quality of life for your paymasters, why not take a look at the large numbers of employees in administration at the various official sites of City of York Council.

Reduce these numbers and balance the books. I would wager that a reduction of 20 per cent in administration will have no detrimental effect on efficiency and services. In fact efficiency will improve!

So come on Rod Hills, think about the people you and your cohorts represent - fight our corner for a change - after all that is why you were elected.
