Evening Press Reader's Letter

Professor Stephen Crow, an experienced planning inspector, was to preside over the Regional Planning Guidance in Yorkshire and Humber. Speculation suggests that he has been removed for recommending the building of an extra 1.1 million new homes in the South East.

Sadly many believe that new homes are a "threat" - including some short-sighted people in Yorkshire and Humberside. The reality is that a decent quality of life cannot be sustained without access to high quality and affordable housing. Plans to increase prosperity in the region will automatically lead to a need for better housing conditions.

It is a sad reflection on the present political process that new housing is a threat. Not that long ago politicians used to compete with each other to promise more and better housing. Housing is still a basic need and certainly not a threat. Let's get our priorities right.
