Evening Press Reader's Letter
I heartily approve of the Civic Trust's proposal to lower the portcullis at Bootham Bar. It would certainly enhance the historic value of York and help to make life safer for pedestrians.
Here at Micklegate Bar, we only have part of our portcullis still intact so we couldn't follow suit. What we could do in keeping with our historic tradition is display a few heads above Micklegate Bar, as they did in the good old days...
Perhaps the heads of some of the cyclists who race along the pavements of Micklegate endangering the lives of pedestrians might be a good idea. I am sure it would prove an added attraction for the city and would definitely be in keeping with our historic past, not to mention making the pavements a lot safer for both visitors and locals alike than they are at present.
