FAMILY FORTUNES: Michelle and Andrew Mooring get in some practice at York Indoor Bowls Club ahead of their England Under 25 games against Wales
York bowlers Michelle and Andrew Mooring are keeping in the family with a remarkable international double.
Michelle, 20, and brother Andrew, 17, have both been selected for the England Under-25s indoor bowls team for their forthcoming fixtures against rivals Wales.
Michelle will represent the women's team at Carmarthen this Sunday while Andrew will turn out for the men's team in Solihull on January 30.
The pair's York and District Indoor Bowls Club team-mate Stuart Bryan, 22, has also been named in the men's team.
It is the first time the Moorings, who live in Clifton Moor, have been called up together although Michelle has previous experience with the England team.
Last year she represented the Under-25s outdoor team in a series of matches against the other home nations. She made such an impact she was promoted to skip after being selected to play at number three.
Michelle's other major achievements have all come in the last two years. In 1998 she became the youngest winner of the county singles outdoor title, was a member of the fours team which reached the semi-finals of the All-England national finals and got to the semi-finals of the Under-31s finals.
Last year she again reached the national finals by winning the county triples and has qualified for the Under-31s singles which take place in March.
It is Andrew's first international recognition since taking up bowls five years ago and he will be hoping to make a good impression in the 16-man team.
Although bowls runs in the Mooring family, Andrew and Michelle are the first to reach international level. Their grandfather Geoff, also a member of the York and District club, said: "It is unusual for a brother and sister to be selected, certainly in the north of England. It is an honour for the family and for the club."
