Now that St Helena has been banished from the York Millennium scene may I make another suggestion please? A bus station. York has been lagging behind her tourism competitors for years, the only large tourist centre without a bus station.
The traffic in and around the city has been described as chaotic. Now there are to be more foot streets and more hotels: more people, and more cars to add to the congestion. A large, modern bus station would surely help alleviate the problems and keep the traffic flowing.
Certainly, older people would feel less vulnerable, particularly at night if they could wait for a bus in a station.
A bus station will cost a great deal of money, but so will the pilot schemes proposed by council consultants.
The Government wishes to persuade us to use public transport, so perhaps they will help out with cash. Why don't the council, First Bus and the people who wish to invest within and near the city get together and make a central bus station a reality before all the viable sites are sold for other purposes.
