Wannabe millionaires were flocking to National Lottery terminals today in the hope of scooping tonight's record mid-week jackpot of £30m.
According to York newsagents, the rush has been on since Saturday's draw, when no-one won top prize for a second successive time, creating a double rollover and the third-highest jackpot ever.
It comes four years after a top prize of £42,008,610 was won and is the record mid-week jackpot amount.
John Smith, proprietor of Maynews, in Parliament Street, said the shop was noticeably busier than usual.
He said: "All the people who have been buying tickets today have been regulars and many of them are saying they'll have a couple of extra lines or a few lucky dips to add to what they usually get because of the rollover."
Cyril Hawkins of A&C Hawkins, Walmgate Bar, said Camelot had informed him sales were due to be up 16 per cent this week.
Ann Calam, buying tickets for the 20 ladies in York District Hospital's dining room syndicate, said: "We usually only enter the Saturday draw but because of the rollover we decided we would do it tonight as well."
Ann said if they won, she would spend the money on her five children and grandchildren.
Peter Horner, of Regent Street, York, said: "I always put £7 on on a Saturday but I won't do it today despite the rollover. If I won the lottery I'd kill myself with kindness."
If no one wins the triple rollover the jackpot money rolls down to the winners of the five balls plus bonus prize tier.
