Today we publish the roll of honour of those people who sent us donations towards our successful campaign to raise £50,000 for our Hospice 2000 Appeal in the final 50 days of the last Millennium.
We asked for a special effort to boost the appeal to raise £2 million for the redevelopment of St Leonard's Hospice in York so it can care for even more people.
One of the ways people could contribute to the cause was to send us cheques and postal orders for any sum from £1. Some individuals sent much more than that, with donations as high as £100.
The total figure received so far at the Evening Press office is over £2,800, which will make a real difference towards achieving the final target by the end of this year.
The £50,000 target was reached before Christmas, with the biggest single contributor to the hospice coffers in that period being the St Leonard's Tree of Lights on York Railway Station.
People wanting to honour a loved one could sponsor a light on the tree for £5 and, although the final figures were still being added up, hospice staff said more than £8,000 had been raised through the lights.
Another big boost came when employees at Terry's Suchard in York outdid themselves to raise £7,000 for the appeal - their target was £2,000. The hospice Christmas Fair in November brought in more than £4,000, and in December the first-ever hospice phone-in hosted by CPP in York raised just over £2,000.
Karen Russell, finance and fundraising manager for St Leonard's, said the amount raised for the appeal was due to lots of individuals, companies and organisations organising events and sending donations.
"We are so thrilled with the response of readers and the local community.
"Many people have personal reasons for supporting the appeal. They have had friends or relatives cared for by the hospice or have had experience of hospice work elsewhere.
"Others recognise that we are a local charity that depends on community support and gives a very special kind of care to those with life-threatening illness."
She added: "We still have a long way to go to reach our target of £2 million, but we have entered 2000 in the best of heart and look forward to another year of wonderful fundraising ideas."
Contributors who sent us donations for the 50-day appeal were asked to fill in a coupon for their name to be included on the roll of honour. While we have made every effort to ensure that every name is on the roll, if your name has not appeared and you have made a contribution and wish your name to be recorded, please contact Andrew Hitchon on 01904 653051 extension 315.
