Two faces of modern woman are presented to us today.

For heroic, can-do woman look no further than Catharine Hartley and Fiona Thornewill, who yesterday became the first British women to walk to the South Pole. Their achievement should leave most of us, man or woman, gasping in admiration. A 700-mile polar walk is one of the toughest tests of endurance on Earth.

For less heroic deeds, look to the 64 per cent of women who admit to having cheated on their partners. If this survey for a women's magazine is true, it suggests that the traditional picture of the love rat as male might need to be updated.
