Pocklington Rugby Union Club were given a teasing work-out by The Unicorns, with the outcome remaining in the balance until Pocklington sealed a 26-12 victory with a try in the last minute.
Pocklington had the initial pressure, including being held up over the line, but Ali McClarron's long breakout set up the position for Unicorns to take the lead with a try in the corner by Jon Paul Wong.
Pocklington came back strongly to batter Unicorns' line before flanker Andrew Wilson crashed over for a try which Gary Pearce converted.
The game continued to be fiercely contested, particularly up front where Pocklington's big pack were matched by an experienced Unicorns eight based on a nucleus of Rotherham and Redcar forwards.
But Pocklington got a flying start to the second half when the ball went loose in a tackle and dropped into the hands of home wing Ben Connolly, who sprinted under the posts for a try which Pearce converted.
At the other end, Unicorns went close to scoring at both corners before Pocklington broke downfield and drove a line-out for Richard Wilson to score.
With ten minutes to go Unicorns' cut the gap to one score as they burst down the right and switched infield for centre Julian Barkworth to cross at the side of the posts, Phil Ambler converting.
However, Pocklington had the final word as flanker Paul Rhodes set off for the line from 25 yards and forced his way over. Pearce converted the try at the sound of the final whistle.
York Rugby Union Club Colts won 20-5 at Driffield.
When Driffield kicked off York's Sam Arkle ran on to the ball at speed and forced play back into Driffield's half.
Most of the possession stayed with York thanks to the crisp rucking skills of Paul Gill, Richard Sidaway and Jon Linfoot.
A scrum on Driffield's 22 metres line was well hooked by Paul Lowe, returning after a shoulder injury. James Arkle, at scrum half, dummied and cut inside, bursting through three tackles before scoring under the posts. Richard Sawyer kicked the conversion.
Ben Foggarty and Kris McDermitt were very effective in dealing with Driffield's kick-and-chase tactics. They caught awkward balls and set up secure rucks.
Foggarty, Sam and James Arkle and Sawyer were outstanding in making big tackles. Sawyer added three points with a penalty kick before half-time.
Neil Cudy ran rings round his opposite number to score, Nick Ventress converting, to put York 17-0 ahead early in the second half.
York put in some stiff work in defence as the home side became more determined. Man of the match Jon Pearson was the most dependable for York, making try-saving tackles and counter-attacking well.
Ventress kicked a penalty from the halfway line to complete the scoring for York. Driffield scored a try in the corner to finish the game.
