A pub selling York-brewed beers looks set to open in Colliergate after councillors were recommended to give it the go-ahead.

York Brewery has applied to turn the empty Grade II listed building next door to Barnitts into The Last Drop Inn, ensuring a guaranteed outlet for the Toft Green brewery.

Members of the planning and transport committee have been recommended to approve the proposal by City of York Council officers.

The pub would be a traditional alehouse selling beers including Terrier and Stonewall.

Named after the brewery's Dick Turpin-themed winter beer, it would include a central bar, three seating areas and a patio.

The application has received no objections from North Yorkshire police.

But letters from neighbours express concern about noise and its proximity to Kings Square, a family orientated area.

The management of Barnitts voiced fears that the pub could encourage damage to neighbouring shops and increased risk of break-ins.

The applicant has already agreed to play music indoors only, reducing any disturbance to neighbouring businesses or residents of St Andrewgate.

Changes to the 16th century building including the redirection of part of a staircase have also caused concern.

And parking facilities fall short of those required by City of York Council regulations.

The council's development control officer Heather Dyson said: "Due to the location along Colliergate, limited disturbance of residential properties would arise."

But she said the plan did not conflict with council policy and, subject to issues involving the staircase and car parking being satisfactorily addressed, the proposal was supported.

The planning and transport committee will discuss the proposal on January 6.

If accepted, the pub could open early next year.
