My wife and I recently travelled in to York by car (sorry Mr Prescott). The parking charge of 70p for one hour was reasonable, but I hadn't bargained for the obstacle course to reach Shambles car park. What is the point of double yellow lines if they don't apply to all and sundry?
We found it necessary to visit York centre again two days later. This time we travelled to Grimston Bar Park and Ride, not only to avoid taking the car into town but also to avoid the congestion at Clifton Moor when trying to reach the Park and Ride there.
The bus fare cost £2.80 for which I could have parked for three hours; the bus driver appeared to have great difficulty in negotiating Piccadilly.
This was obviously due to the number of ordinary vehicles vying with buses, taxis and delivery vans and cars not only stopping to drop off and pick-up, but parked in taxi bays thus preventing legitimate vehicles from gaining access. There was not, of course, a traffic warden in sight.
By the way congratulations to City of York Council for the closure of Wigginton Road between the roundabout and Bumper Castle. Is two to three weeks before the Christmas rush the best time to programme work of this nature? Please bear in mind that there are more Christmas shoppers at Clifton Moor than there are tourists during the summer.
