Three people have died in accidents on Yorkshire roads.

A Selby man was killed and his female passenger was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after a road accident which also killed another driver.

A BMW 535 and a Rover 820, travelling in opposite directions, collided near Drewton on the South Cave to Market Weighton road a quarter of a mile south of the junction with the B1230 last night.

The driver of the BMW, a Market Weighton man, and the driver of the Rover, a man from the Selby area, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Humberside police said a female front seat passenger in the Rover from the same address in the Selby area suffered multiple leg and internal injuries and paralysis.

She has been detained in Hull Royal Infirmary.

Medical staff at the hospital describe her condition as stable.

One man died and two others were taken to hospital today following an accident on the Cropton to Rosedale Abbey road near Pickering. The accident happened near the Blacksmiths Arms at Hartoft End on the edge of Cropton Forest, about five miles north of the A170 Thirsk-Scarborough road.

Firefighters were called to release the dead man from the wreckage.

The other two casualties, at least one of whom was conscious, were taken to Scarborough Hospital.

Ambulance service spokesman Nigel Metcalfe said a 28 year old man suffered spinal and pelvic injuries, and the other casualty - a 19 year old man - had head and neck injuries.
