Practice, if it does not quite make perfect in golf, is certainly of enormous benefit.

Amply testifying to that is Rob Hunt. The 17-handicapper benefited quickly from a series of lessons with Forest of Galtres Golf Club professional Phil Bradley to win the club's autumn stableford.

Hunt tallied an impressive 47 points to finish five in front of Andy Hough (20 handicap), who similarly flourished after guidance from Bradley.

Brian Lockett (19) pipped Gerry Coop (19) for third place on a better back nine after both carded 41.

JUDY McHenry maintained solid form at Fulford Golf Club.

After finishing third on 75 in the ladies' section September extra medal to Patricia Mitchell (68) and Jenny Whicher (70), McHenry won the October medal.

Another score of 75 put her three shots ahead of silver division winner Ann Robinson to win the October medal.

The Melville Trophy, which was played over two rounds, saw Pat Cooper finish well ahead on 143. That was ten shots clear of Judy Jones and Margaret Burton.

HARROGATE Golf Club juniors have qualified for the northern finals of the Saab/Daily Mail national junior championships to be played at Gullane later this month.

The 2000 Inter-Union six-man junior team event will be played next year at Brough on August 24.

FULFORD Golf Club's annual medal round - the last of the season - went to David Dobson on 70, two better than Barry Hughes. Alan Bradley won the October extra medal round with 68.

BEDALE Golf Club's John Shaw and Danny Clapton were fourth in the first winter alliance, held at Knaresborough Golf Club. They posted a score of 66.

Harry pride of Red Lion

Harry's game ruled in the Red Lion Exhibition Hotel Group Golf Society, some of whose members are shown above at the final round played at Bedale Golf Club.

Harry Deighton, who won the round at Bedale, finished the overall club champion ahead of runner-up Dave Darcy and Mick Hagan third. Dave Kerr won the society's Scratch Cup. Deighton totalled 44 points at Bedale, with Eric Brown on 41 and Darcy on 38.

The nearest the pin winners were Paul Wrigglesworth, Mick Sawyer. Barry Dick and Hagan hit the longest drives. The fun round nearest the pin winner was Alan Williams.

In a round at Thirsk victory went to Kerr on the back nine over Stan Thackway, both totalling 37 points. Hagan was third, on 35. Kerr was also nearest the pin, while the longest drive was by Deighton.
