York city centre was gridlocked early today after a head-on collision between two cars.

A motorist was taken to hospital after the accident, which happened in Bishopthorpe Road, near Skeldergate Bridge, during the rush hour.

The 30-year-old man was today receiving treatment at York District Hospital for a compound fracture to the leg. The driver of the other vehicle was treated at the roadside for shock.

A police spokesman said the accident had caused "massive tailbacks".

He added: "No matter where we look on the CCTV cameras, the whole city is affected." Traffic entering the city from all directions ground to a standstill, with commuters delayed by up to 30 minutes.

A diversion was put in place along Scarcroft Road, and traffic was backed up to Fulford.
