The University of York has been given the go-ahead for a £43 million redevelopment of its electronics, biology and bioscience faculties by the City Council.

The Planning and Transport Committee approved planning permission to build a large three and four storey building and to relocate the electronics department to it. They also approved a plan to build a three storey building, green house and extend an already existing block, to improve its biology and bioscience faculties.

The University has made bids for cash to both Central Government and the Wellcome Trust. If the University does not get the funding then a revised application will be submitted

"We are delighted planning permission has been granted for these two projects. It will bring huge benefits, not just to the university but to the whole of York if the University receives £43 million," said Hilary Layton, spokesman for the University.

Ms Layton added that the projects would not only improve research facilities at the University, but would bring jobs to the area as well.
