My father-in-law John Linton Houlgate (Jack) died on August 20 in York District Hospital aged 76 years.

When he died a small part of York's past died too. He was the last person to be born in the Shambles, something his family were extremely proud of.

Born at No 5 Little Shambles, his grandfather was a butcher, the business being handed down to his father, who, during the war years was president of the Butchers' Association and allocated meat rations to York butchers.

When the Evening Press printed an article on York's Shambles in 1990 they went to him and he recalled his memories.

Working his way down and back up the other side of the Shambles, he remembered what shops there were and the names of residents who lived there.

He was also a Normandy veteran and wore his medals with pride.

His passion was the NVA, he only recently returned from trip to the beaches in France.

He would stand with his collection tin for them.

He was also a Freeman of York. Jack will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
