Schemes to upgrade the Strensall Road roundabout and the Grimston Bar Interchange on York's outskirts have been revealed as highways chiefs unveil further details of multi-million pound road improvements around the city.

The eight-month programme starts next month with the £500,000 enlargement of the Wigginton Road roundabout on the city's A1237 northern ring road.

That project will run for three months from mid-September, and is the opening phase of an ambitious programme first revealed exclusively by the Evening Press earlier this month.

The Highways Agency and City of York Council have now unveiled schemes to improve the Strensall Road roundabout and the Grimston Bar Interchange while setting out their plans in greater detail.

The work at Strensall Road, where Ryedale MP John Greenway has demanded action to curb dangers for pedestrians and cyclists, is not due to start until next January, and is scheduled to finish in March.

The resurfacing at the Grimston Bar Interchange is due to be done at night during September and October.

Agency project manager David Phillips pledged to keep disruption to a minimum, adding: "These improvements to the roads around York will bring real benefit to road users through improved safety as well as better access to and from the city at busy junctions on the outer ring road." The work at the Wigginton Road roundabout, to increase traffic capacity and improve safety, with a new link road into Clifton Moor, will mean the temporary closure for about two weeks of the B1363 Wigginton Road immediately south of the junction.

From September 13 Amey Construction will start a £500,000 resurfacing of the ring road between Rawcliffe and Hopgrove - work which is scheduled to take place between 10pm and 6am with cash penalties if traffic management is not removed on time. Also the contractor must keep noise to a minimum near homes.

Other projects are:

in September, creating a cycle track on the A1237 between Millfield Lane and its junction with the A19, causing off-peak lane closures;

between September and October, night time carriageway repairs on the A1079 at Kexby;

in October, carriageway repairs with off-peak lane closures on the A1237 between the A64 (Askham Bryan) and A59 junctions, road repairs in Stonebow in the city centre, and resurfacing of the A59 between the city boundary and the A1237;

from next January to March, a new roundabout to replace the existing Millfield Lane junction to the link road with the A1237, and replacement of two bridge decks on the A64 between the Fulford and Grimston Bar junctions causing overnight closures;

between February and May, enlarging the A59-A1237 roundabout to the west of York.
