Hot-shot Jamie Benn reflected on a season beyond his wildest dreams after writing his name into the York Wasps record books.

UP AND OVER: Jamie Benn boots over a goal on the way to breaking two club scoring records against Oldham

His 13 goals and 30 points in yesterday's 70-8 hammering of Oldham set new club records for goals in a match and points in a match.

And he comfortably achieved the goals required to take him past 100 for the season. There was some debate before the game as to whether drop goals should count towards his final tally - he had kicked 96 including four drops - but in the end it was immaterial as he banged over 13 from 14 attempts.

It was the perfect end to the perfect season for Benn who signed for York from Castleford at the start of the campaign. He turned in a man of the match performance against his former team-mates in the Challenge Cup, attracted the attention of Super League side Hull Sharks and followed that with a surprise call-up to the Scotland squad.

Yesterday's achievements were the icing on the cake, his 13 goals breaking the previous record of 12 set by Gary Pearce at Nottingham in 1992 and his 30 points overtaking the record of 28 shared by Pearce, Brad Davis against Highfield in 1995 and Bill Jacques at the turn of the last century.

Ironically Pearce, now coach of Pocklington RU, made a rare visit to Huntington Stadium yesterday to witness his records fall.

Benn refused to take all the credit for setting the new targets and said: "It's alright breaking records but I think the team's done it today. They scored a lot of easy tries for me. I think it will take some beating now. There aren't many teams who will roll over and die and let us do that to them.

"The 100 goals had been playing on my mind all week. I've never practised as much. When we came to the ground this morning I started practising with the conditioner (Simon Hartley) and he told me to relax and they were all going over."

Looking back at the season, Benn picked out the Cup match against Castleford, the narrow away win at Keighley and yesterday's victory as the high points. But a modest Benn thought there was still room for improvement. "I could have played better. Some games I've let myself down and the let the team down but overall I'm happy with my season.

"Apart from a lapse in mid-season when we should have beaten Workington away and fell off a bit, overall we couldn't have asked for more.

"There are five top sides above us but we've done best out of the second division teams and have shocked a few teams along the way."

The 22-year-old will now have to consider his future in the close season but his chances of staying at York received a boost yesterday when Hull dropped back to the bottom of Super League.

Previously Benn had claimed he would only consider a move to Hull if they stayed in the top flight and yesterday he was remaining open-minded.

"I don't know what will happen. I'll have to take it from next week. My agent has spoken to Hull but I haven't spoken to him for a week so I don't know what's happening.

"If York can come up with a deal I'm happy to stay here. If we can keep this team together we'll have a very good season next year."
