Speed duo Colin Fallows and Mark Newby have smashed their way into the record books by completing a remarkable double today.

VAMPIRE: Colin Fallows breaking one of the British land speed records in his car Vampire at Elvington airfield

The pair have now hurtled their way past four standing land speed records in two days to achieve their dream of becoming Britain's fastest men.

In only three runs at Elvington airfield, Mark, piloting jet car Split Second, put his name on the standing-start quarter-of-a-mile and 500 metres records.

He followed team-mate Colin's success yesterday. Colin became the fastest driver with a flying start over the same distances, notching up an average speed of 269mph, ten miles an hour faster than the 18-year-old previous record.

Mark today shot through 500 metres at more than 120 miles per hour, knocking more than four seconds off the previous record.

He followed up with another run over a quarter-of-a-mile, reaching speeds of more than 107 miles per hour, 1.2 seconds faster than the previous record.

He said: "We are obviously absolutely delighted.

"We have come here aiming to break four records and that is exactly what we've done. Achieving that must be a record in itself.

"It has been such a difficult and arduous task, but we've kept trying and it is fantastic to have done it."

The pair are now preparing for an evening of celebration before laying plans to challenge their own new record. Colin said: "It's an immense relief to have done this, but we'll be back because record-breaking is all about trying again."
