Jonathan Greening proudly displays his European Champions' League winners' medal, in detail below, wearing a shirt signed by all his team-mates

European Cup winner Jonathan Greening has set himself an even higher goal after his treble-trance dream with Manchester United.

The former York City star collected a cherished Champions' League gold medal in the heat of the biggest upset in the history of the European Cup when United overturned Bayern Munich in front of 98,000 fans at Barcelona's Nou Camp Stadium.

Greening was on the substitutes' bench, declaring that to be a privilege to be part of United's most glorious night and their unprecedented achievement.

But the striker has targeted an even greater involvement.

Said Greening: "It's like anything. Once you've had something, you want something even better. Now I've had a taste of that, even though I was only on the bench, I want more. I want to play, that's my main ambition. I want to be setting up a goal. I want to be scoring a goal in matches like that."

Greening's first full season at Old Trafford since his big-money move from Bootham Crescent 15 months ago has yielded him three starts in the Worthington Cup and four more appearances from the bench in the star-studded ranks.

But feted United manager Alex Ferguson thinks so highly of the youngster he has offered Greening a new four-year deal, despite still having two more years to go on his present contract.

Greening, who rose through the ranks in six meteoric years with the Minstermen, said he would discuss the lucrative new deal in the summer with the United boss, who accomplished what no other manager has done in England - a treble of Premiership championship, FA Cup and European Cup all in the one campaign.

"I've got to get that sorted out in the summer, but I am just so happy," said the youngster, who with his best friend Richard Cresswell - another former City star now dazzling in the top-flight - began training today with the rest of the England Under-21 squad.

"This has been the most fantastic, absolutely brilliant time in my life since that night in Barcelona.

"I still can't believe it. I'm still trying to take it all in. No-one could ever have imagined how this would happen."

Looking back to that incredible night at the Nou Camp, Greening reflected how even he believed United's chance to complete the historic treble had evaporated.

"I looked up and there were 90 minutes showing on the clock. I remember thinking 'how unlucky' we were going to be. Bayern Munich had defended and we'd had all the possession. I thought 'we're not going to win' and then Teddy (Sheringham) scored and that was it.

"I knew then we'd win in extra time. But I don't think anyone could believe we would get a winner so soon. When Ole (Solskjaer) scored the second my head just went. I just ran on to the pitch.

"It was frightening, just frightening. And the reception we got from the fans was that good it was scary." Those delirious scenes lasted for a good hour out on the Barcelona pitch, added the 20-year-old. We were all just walking around and celebrating with the cup. It was brilliant."

Between receiving his medal and the subsequent party, fanfare and parade around Manchester, Greening confessed it was all a blur.

"It's been a fairytale for me. A Man U fan since I was a kid, then I make my way from York City to Old Trafford, and then I am on the bench for the European Cup Final.

"It's something I will never, ever forget. No-one can take that away from me. They can't take that medal away from me either.

"After 40 years I can look back and say 'I was there and I was part of it'. That's something to tell my grand-children."
