There were some nail-biting games during a double dose of matches in the Evening Press Cricket World Cup sponsored by Rawcliffes Intersport.

Sixteen matches involving Primary School youngsters from the York area were played on the University of York sports field, with several last over finishes being the order of the day.

Because of the previous week's weather washout, two sets of fixtures were played.England A (Robert Wilkinson, Strensall) were involved in two thrilling games in a tight Group C.

They edged out Australia (Bishopthorpe) by 17 runs and Sri Lanka A by 11 runs to book a place in the quarter finals.

England are guaranteed a team in the semi-finals as England A will face England (Knavesmire) in the last eight.

The tightest match was in Group D where two wickets fell in the final over to see Zimbabwe (Kingsway) pipped England (Knavesmire) by eight runs - but both sides eventually went through to the quarter-finals.
