Having just seen the York Amateur Operatic and Drama Society's excellent performance of South Pacific at the Theatre Royal, I was drawn into the comparison with the similarly fine show put on recently by the York Light Operetta Society and the York Musical Society whose regular Minster concerts are in a class of their own.
Now I read of the York Symphony Orchestra centenary performance due on June 26 at the Central Hall of the University of York.
How many other small cities in England can match such local talent? Add to that the splendid performances at the Theatre Royal, Grand Opera House and Barbican Centre and you have virtually unparalleled venues in a relatively small area.
