I was very relieved to read in the Evening Press (April 29) that Nestl Rowntree is to 'phase out genetically modified ingredients from chocolates made in York.'
I had been dismayed to read in the Daily Mail (April 10) that Nestl UK was listed as a 'red' company, (one which 'sees some potential benefits in GM food and is prepared to use GM ingredients and derivatives). I was sad to learn that KitKat, Black Magic, Dairy Box, Quality Street and Matchmakers were apparently no longer safe to eat, though the April 29 article in fact says the GM materials are removed during the refining and purification process.
I am worried about jobs in York if people wanting to avoid GM ingredients turn to the products of other companies.
What about Terry's Suchard? Terry's was listed a 'amber' - a company which had no clear stance on genetic modification. It would be nice if it too became clear and 'green'.
