ONE man's remarkable odyssey across all continents and more than 50 countries is drawn together in a new photographic exhibition at York's National Railway Museum.

Chris Mossop prepares the show at the railway museum

Railways of the World starts today, featuring the work of Colin Garratt, who has captured a range of images from a steam locomotive on the Nancha Bank in China to a Class 321 on the Northampton Loop.

Included in the show are photographs from Colin's recent trip to India where he has been documenting the end of mainline steam.

In 1969 Colin abandoned a promising commercial career to document the last steam locomotives of the world. Today he remains the only professional photographer in this field.

Railways of the World is complemented by the museum's own Worth a Thousand Words exhibition of photos which runs to the end of December.

Museum head Andrew Scott said: "Railways of the World is not purely a railway exhibition. These lavish images embrace with equal passion photography and a sense of adventure.

"We have extensive photographic and artistic collections. These two exhibitions will appeal to visitors who may not have previously thought of us as an arts venue." Colin Garratt is holding an illustrated lecture at the NRM, entitled Around the World in Search of Steam, tonight at 7.30pm.
