A dream start turned into a nightmare for Easingwold School's Under-15 cricket team as they were beaten by Lancaster Grammar in the last 32 of the Lord's Taverners Colts national knockout.
IN VAIN: James Pringle claims the scalp of another Lancaster Grammar School batsman in Easingwold School's failed attempt to reach the last 16 of the Lord's Taverners COLTS competion.
Easingwold, led by York CC bowler James Pringle, looked all set for a quick victory at Clifton Park when they bowled out the first five Lancaster batsmen, who all play for Lancashire U-15s, for just eight runs.
But at 30 for seven it all started to go wrong for Easingwold as Lancaster's number seven and nine batsmen turned on the style and helped them to 102 all out.
Easingwold's reply began well as they reached 25 without loss after 10 overs but as the run rate slowed they took risks to try and get back on track and were bowled out for 79.
Teacher Jonathan Marwood, who knew the dangers posed by the Lancaster side which had reached a national final as U-13s, said: "I felt so sorry for them, they did brilliantly. At eight for five they were cock-a-hoop. Afterwards in the changing room they were just sat there in silence they were so disappointed."
Pringle, who had been suffering from a groin injury and only decided to play minutes before the start, was the star performer, taking 3 for 15 and top scoring with 18. He was well supported by Wayne Linton who took 2 for 15, Katherine Power 3-22 and Nick Thornicroft 1 for 8 from seven overs.
Easingwold had reached the national knockout stages by winning the regional event last year.
