I write in response to D A Leesley's letter Driving Me Mad (May 1), about the standard of driving instructors. He states that driving instructors only need to pass their Advanced Driving Test and go on a short course before they can set up in business. This is totally incorrect.

The Advanced Driving Test is one anyone can undertake to improve their standard of driving and is operated by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Driving instructors have to pass a three-part test to qualify. Part One is a 100 question theory paper, Part Two is practical driving ability and Part Three is instructional ability.

You only get three attempts at each part and if you fail you have to wait one year to re-apply.

You are then regularly monitored by the Driving Standards Agency and graded one to six. If you get grade three or below you are reassessed within weeks and if you have not improved to a grade four or above you have your name removed from the register and cannot operate.

As for people carrying out incorrect manoeuvres, it may be that they are on test and the examiner will only stop them if they are endangering other road-users.

Why do bus drivers continually overtake on the left in a 30mph zone on Tadcaster Road?

Do they think because they have their own bus lane they can do whatever speed they want?
