Children from York will be entertaining the crowds with a potted history of York in the Millennium Dome in London.

Youngsters from York have been invited up to Greenwich next year to take part in a project, designed to give every community in the UK an opportunity to tell their story in the Dome on a different day in the year 2000.

Julie Bellanfante, education manager for the New Millennium Experience Company in the North Yorks region, said: "York has taken up the opportunity to tell the history of the city in the Dome.

"The whole experience will be beneficial to the children of York. The opportunity for them to have a wider audience for their work will have great educational value. The team building skills that young children will benefit from will be great.

"They will be learning and teaching, and having fun at the same time."

"York is planning to tell their history through the environment."

The story will be performed in a specially built theatre within the Dome. The theatre boasts a proscenium arch stage and professional sound and lighting rigs, will seat 500 people.

Julie said: "Here York kids will be able to present a further insight into their community."

Andrew Taylor, chief executive of sponsors McDonald's UK, said: "A cast of thousands will be combining to tell an epic tale of the UK's history and hopes for the future."

The Our Town project involves a total of 202 education authorities pulls together thousands of schools, arts and theatre groups.
