James, 12, escaped with a few bumps and bruises when he was thrown onto the bonnet of the car near to Lowfield School, Acomb.

His mum Susan said she could not believe he had had such a lucky escape. Doctors gave him the all-clear to go back to school after releasing him from hospital.

James was walking home from school with his twin Ashley, brother Daniel, 15, and sister Naomi, 16, on Friday afternoon when the accident happened.

He was half way across Gale Lane, at the junction with Lowfields Drive, when he was in collision with a car.

"I can remember flying onto the bonnet and flying back down to the ground," he said. Ashley said his brother had landed on his shoulder and passed out and the driver, other motorists and pedestrians had rushed to help.

Naomi sat with her brother while they waited for the ambulance.

"I was shaking, everything just seemed to go into slow motion," she said. "When he came round I was talking to him and calming him down and holding his hand."

Mum Susan, who was picking up her other daughter Charlotte, eight, from Westfield Junior School, found out from Daniel and rushed to York District Hospital where James was examined.

Initially ambulance staff were concerned he may have leg and spinal injuries.

Susan, of Westfield Close, Upper Poppleton, said: "They kept him in overnight and he had head-to-toe X-rays but apart from bumps and bruises, he's fine. He's very lucky."
