Arthur Eckersley's war ended in France in 1940, when he died a hero, defending a bridge from the enemy. But his death marked the beginning of a longer battle for his family.
First they had to wait for many years to find out how Arthur had died. Then his daughter Ann fought to have her father's sacrifice recognised by having his name added to a York war memorial.
Thanks to Army officers at Imphal Barracks, that wish has finally come true. The name of Arthur Eckersley has now been permanently inscribed alongside the other soldiers who paid the ultimate price to secure our freedom.
We promised to remember them. Now, after nearly 60 years, we have kept that promise to Mr Eckersley.
