I Read with interest the article about the parents who hope to find places at Fulford School for their children.

In California we are known to be a highly-mobile society, but one thing most parents tend to want for their students is to stay close to home for school.

It makes sense to most parents to support a school in their neighbourhood rather than one miles across town.

Research has shown that community involvement is important to the success of a school. We have found that there is much greater support from parents when a school is attended by children living nearby rather than those who have to make a special trip to attend functions, and fund-raisers etc.

School choice exists by law in California, but is overridden by the right for a child to attend the school in his or her local attendance area before any other child from outside the area is placed. This seems an eminently sensible approach to me.
