YORK Sugar came back from two goals down to snatch a 3-2 victory in the 88th minute of the York Leeper Hare Reserve Trophy final against New Earswick.
Holders New Earswick settled into their game first and took the lead when Pete Sinclair was brought down inside the box and Charlie Holmes scored from the spot. Early in the second half Darren Hunter added a second and it looked as though the trophy was on its way back to New Earswick.
Bit York Sugar had other ideas. First Dave Ruttle turned sharply in the box and placed a neat shot past veteran goalkeeper Glanville to reduce the arrears. Then substitute Mat Carlton levelled the scores.
With two minutes left Carlton became Sugar's hero when he ran onto a defence splitting pass and calmly slotted the ball past the 'keeper for the winning goal.
In the Junior Cup final, Thorpe United secured a league and cup double in dramatic fashion as the7 beat South Bank 5-4 on penalties after the match finished 2-2 after extra-time.
South Bank settled well and with better finishing could have been two goals up in the first ten minutes.
But against the run of play and in what was their first effective attacking move Thorpe went ahead when veteran poacher Mick Tiplady was on hand to tap in the simplest of goals after South Bank 'keeper Drake failed to hold a shot.
South Bank continued to press forward, but found themselves two down. Thorpe were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and when Drake pulled off a great save to push the ball onto the post, Alan Ward was quickest to react to net the rebound.
After the break South Bank's Kehoe and Allcock began to give the reliable Thorpe defence a torrid time and it came as no surprise when Allcock cut in from the left wing and was brought down in the box. Graham Bootland made no mistake from the spot.
South Bank continued to make all the running, and as tempers became frayed the referee dismissed a South Bank player. Bootland stepped up to smash in a 20yd free kick to send the game into extra-time. Both teams were showing signs of fatigue and Thorpe were reduced to ten when a foul on the tricky Allcock produced a second yellow card for the offender.
No further goals resulted and in a dramatic penalty shoot out Thorpe won 5-4 in the sudden death phase.
The Senior Cup final also went into extra-time with Pocklington beating Bishopthorpe United 3-1.
Bishopthorpe looked the most likely to score in the early stages with striker Adam Wood hitting a post after five minutes and then shooting wide from a narrow angle.
Pocklington's Richard Millett was unlucky when he unleashed a left foot shot from 20 yards which went narrowly wide.
Scott Clapham, the Bishopthorpe 'keeper, pulled off a fine save from a Millett free kick, then Pocklington had what would have been an own goal following a free kick ruled out by an offside flag.
But minutes later Andrew Price rose to head in another free kick to put Pocklington into the lead.
Pocklington had more of the game in the second half with Barry Gargett and Paul Wilson looking lively up front. Clapham pulled off another save from a Wilson free kick after 60 minutes and Joe Gardham missed a good chance for Bishopthorpe. Substitute Graham Wigley grabbed the equaliser when he volleyed home a left wing cross from Gardham to send the game into extra-time.
Wigley had to leave the field injured and as Bishopthorpe had used all their substitutes they faced extra-time with only ten men. Pocklington took full advantage, and Mark Ablett put Pocklington back in front when his header hit the bar and rebounded into the net off the back of the unfortunate keeper, Clapham.
Soon after Wilson raced clear for Pocklington and saw his shot parried by Clapham for Mark Croft to accept the chance to put the game beyond Bishopthorpe's reach.
