The final, conclusive skirmish in our Battle of the Bands 1999 took place at Fibbers last night. Five finalists gave their all in a bid to win the coveted crown, but only one could win. Congratulations to Vacant Goldfish.
Their victory marked the climax of a contest begun 13 weeks ago. It has been an exciting, exhausting and sometimes bumpy ride.
The passion and commitment of every band that takes part ensures the battle is fierce, from first heat to last. Tempers are frayed, egos are bruised and controversy rages long after the last chord has been struck.
But no one can argue that the competition, run by the Evening Press in conjunction with Fibbers, is anything less than an excellent platform for local talent. And the prize is a dream for any aspiring rock star. Vacant Goldfish have won a week in a recording studio, a local mini-tour, the chance to support top band Shed 7 and £500.
The band members are all students at Huntington School. They have both the time and the talent to develop their winning sound. We wish them well, and will follow their progress with great interest.
