IN a week that has been dominated by bleak headlines about murder and war, it is wonderful to report some genuinely uplifting news. York teenager Robin Francis is on the road to recovery after beating meningitis.
This is not only a huge relief for Robin and his family. It is also a signal to the whole community that the deadly brain infection can be overcome.
The word meningitis strikes terror into the heart of every parent. Even with modern medical advances, this illness can and does claim young lives.
Robin was a very fit and active young man, but the infection left him desperately ill for two weeks. His recovery was helped by his strength, the support of his family and the skill and care of staff at York District Hospital.
The fact that the illness was quickly diagnosed was also crucial. Meningitis is rare, yet all families should be aware of the symptoms as a sensible precaution.
Though Robin has been left weakened by his fight, he is determined to resume competitive swimming as soon as possible. He has the talent to be a future Olympian.
And now he has beaten meningitis, he can go back to being a winner in the pool.
