Football: York's lead slips away

York City Boys Under-11s travelled to play Leeds in the second leg of the Sheffield Green 'Un Cup final, having beaten Leeds 1-0 in the first leg in York.

But Leeds gained their revenge by winning the tie 3-0 and taking the trophy 3-1 on aggregate.

The York boys played some good football but Leeds proved the stronger team on the day.

The York team were presented with the runners-up Archie Clark Shield and all the players received individual medals.

The York boys have the chance to turn the tables on Leeds when they play them yet again in their final Yorkshire League game.

The All Saints' School U13 soccer team has reached the final of the County U13 Cup competition and they play Allertonshire School, from Northallerton, tonight, at Bedale Football Club.

The outstanding Primary Cup semi-final between Hempland and Westfield has now been played with Westfield winning 3-1. They will now play St Aelred's in the Primary Cup final at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday, May 4, kick-off 6pm.

The Intermediate (U13) Cup final between Manor and Fulford will be played this Friday, April 30, at the York City training ground, Wigginton.

The York Schools' soccer finals, due to be played at the City's Wigginton training ground last Wednesday, were postponed due to the bad weather, but the Harry Pannell (U15) trophy final was played at Huntington School, where hosts Huntington beat Tadcaster 3-2.

With ten minutes to go Tadcaster were leading 2-1, but Huntington fought back to level the scores and the winning goal came in the last minute.

There will be no play-off between Robert Wilkinson and Westfield to determine the winners of primary league A, as Robert Wilkinson have conceded. Westfield now go into the primary league play-offs.

Football Results

Primary Cup SF: Hempland 1, Westfield 3.

Lower Primary league (U10s): Kingsway 2, Haxby Road 0; English Martyrs 0, Copmanthorpe 5 (Peter Brown 3).

Orienteering

Seventy pupils form 11 schools took park in the first event of the newly formed Orienteering league at the Knavesmire last Wednesday.

The pupils had a time limit of 40 minutes to score as many points as possible by finding up to 20 controls.

The start and finish were situated at York Sixth Form College and the controls were spread out on the playing fields, Knavesmire Woods and the racecourse.

The pupils could go round individually or in pairs and it was rewarding to see novices and junior international orienteers competing at the same event. Matthew Speake, of Joseph Rowntree School and Eborienteers, surprised the organisers by finding all 20 points with eight minutes to spare.
