Police have issued a photofit of the man suspected of carrying out attacks on women at the University of York for this week's Evening Press Crimestoppers appeal.

An E-fit impression of the man police want to speak to about the university attacks

Two women fell prey to attacks around the campus area last month.

One was left extremely frightened after being grabbed. In the other incident a woman was knocked to the ground by a man who then smashed her over the head with a bottle.

The female student, who was the victim of the first assault, had been walking back to the Heslington campus along Retreat Lane late on Monday, March 1.

She saw a young man in front of her blocking her way and when she got nearer to him he refused to let her past and grabbed hold of her around the waist.

The student managed to struggle free from his grasp and ran terrified to the nearest building to raise the alarm.

Her attacker is described as white and aged between 20 and 25. He is 6ft tall with broad shoulders and had dark, closely shaved hair.

He has dark brown eyes and a long, thin face with a large, broad nose.

His face was clean shaven and he was wearing dark jeans, a shirt and a thin dark jacket.

The second attack took place about three weeks later on March 25 as a 40-year-old woman was walking through the grounds of the university.

As the woman, who is not a student, passed Wentworth College she became aware that she was being followed.

Minutes later she was cracked across the back of her head with a glass bottle and left lying on the ground in a dazed state while her attacker made off.
