Poppleton Tennis club players completed a clean sweep of titles, the first club to achieve this feat in the 21-year history of the Terry's Suchard All Gold Family Tennis Tournament in Rowntree Park, York.

Two of the four trophies were retained, John Bush and his daughter, Tamsin, winning the mixed doubles and Hugh Fowles and son Guy winning the men's doubles.

The mixed event produced the most exciting final, the Bush's defeating Govind and Anne Baker 6-5 after the Bakers had been within a point of victory on the sudden-death deuce principle, brought in to lessen the chances of protracted matches.

The husband and wife doubles went to Richard and Rosemary Cantrell, who defeated James and Moragh Robinson, who come from Brandsby and were competing for the first time.

The Robinsons had caused an upset in the semi-final when beating holders Hugh and Sally Fowles 5-3 in the best of nine games match. The Cantrells won in 1987 and 1989 and had lost in seven finals since.

The women's doubles went to Marjorie and Sarah Collinson, the 1986 champions, who competed again after a long absence - Sarah now works in London - beating Dominique Morrissey and Evelyn Atkinson (Fulford) 5-2 in the final.

The Collinsons were among a large group of former champions invited to a function to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the start of the championships.

They began in 1979 after a meeting a year earlier when professional tennis coach Gina Huntington, who had learned of the family format from a coaching colleague in Shropshire, asked Peter Terry, the last Terry director of the Joseph Terry and sons family, if his company were interested in supporting a tournament.

It has been a happy sponsorship with the tournament helping to produce a number of good club players, Yorkshire League players and several local champions.

Peter Terry, now 80, returned to greet guests at the function and give a welcome speech along with Gina Huntington, chairman of the tournament and the only person to be involved every year since it began.

Terry's Suchard have now ended their sponsorship but several companies have already said they are interested in taking their place. Their names will be announced in due course once negotiations have been completed.ResultsMen's doubles (father and son) semi-finals: Hugh and Guy Fowles (Poppleton) bt Richard and Tom Cantrell (Poppleton) 5-4; Stuart and Phil Langley (Wigginton) bt Paul and James Harper (Brandesburton) 5-2.
