A happy day, May 2, 1997. Much rejoicing. Eighteen long years of Tory rule behind us.

Things can only get better, New Labour said - but it will take time.

We will put more money into the NHS, and cut waiting lists, they said. My mother, aged 89 and a life-long Socialist, believed them.

Now, almost two years on, she has developed cataracts in both eyes and was referred to see a specialist in July 1998. She was duly seen last month and told that her eyesight could be much improved.

She is unable to read or watch television for long, a favourite pastime for the elderly, also she can no longer sew, another enjoyable hobby.

How long will she have to wait, we asked, for the first operation?

At least a year we were told. She will, by then, be in her 91st year.

Perhaps her eyesight will be so poor by then she may not be able to see her way to vote Labour again. My husband and I certainly won't.
