BUSINESSMEN in Yorkshire were today giving sterling support to a drive to keep the pound.
Businessman Paul Sykes
The Democracy Movement joined together with business and political pressure groups in the Rally for the Pound campaign at York's Tempest Anderson Hall.
The rally saw leading Yorkshire businessman Paul Sykes taking the stage along with Austin Mitchell, Labour MP for Grimsby, and Nick Herbert, chief executive of Business for Sterling, the campaign which was launched in Yorkshire on April 22.
More than 70,000 supporters have already signed up to take part in the campaign, which opposes the European single currency.
Mr Sykes said: "The phenomenal growth rate of the Democracy Movement's grassroots support base is extremely encouraging."It shows the British people will not be brainwashed by the Government's one-sided information campaign and are prepared to fight to save the pound."
The rally is the first in a series to be held in the UK this year.
