I AM surprised your correspondent Sara Robin seems to advise cyclists to ignore cycle routes (Evening Press, April 10).
City of York Council has gone out of its way, in some cases working with Sustrans, to provide for cyclists heading into and out of the city (although their research on the outer ring road is not so good).
The idea of segregating cyclists from other road users is to make it safer for both, not to give either an advantage.
The Highway Code, as Ms Robin states, is for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers.
If one section chooses to ignore the advice then other road users are put at risk. What would happen if a car driver decided to use a cycle route because it happened to be a bit quicker? I am sure cyclists would soon complain.
Allowing cyclists to ignore the Highway Code can only lead to further uncertainty, collision and injury.
All road users have a responsibility for the safety of each other.
