Fifteen-year-old all-rounder James Pringle, from Haxby, is to make his first team debut for York Cricket Club tomorrow, writes Peter Vine.
What a catch: Fifteen-year-old James Pringle gets in a spot of catching practice during York Cricket Club nets at Clifton Park
He will become one of the youngest players to turn out for the club at Yorkshire League level.
The Easingwold School and Yorkshire Under 15 player will line up against Sheffield United tomorrow (11.30am).
He will be following in the footsteps of his father, Malcolm, a former York first team opening batsman, who captained York's second team to the Costcutter York Senior Cricket League's first division title last season and promotion to the premier division.
James' selection caps a great few months for the young sporting all-rounder, who signed schoolboy forms for Halifax Town FC in January.
An in-swing bowler and right handed batsman, he has an equally talented 12-year-old brother, Tom, who plays in York's Pulleyn Heseleton York Vale League.
However, York will be without their registered overseas player, Matthew Petrie from Brisbane, who has yet to fly from Australia because of a stomach disorder that stopped him from playing for Queensland U21s recently.
Once Petrie has been registered to play in the Yorkshire League, York cannot look to signing another overseas player to take his place.
York's skipper, Ian Dews has gone from strength to strength since taking over the captaincy from the former Leicestershire colt, Andy Greasley ten years ago.
Few would have thought that his side could lift itself from tenth at the end of 1997 to finish third by the end of last season and win the Yorkshire KO Cup.
Colin McLocklan, who captained Hull in 1988 and recently played for Driffield has moved into the York area.
A gritty left handed bat and brisk right arm bowler, he has joined the York club where his experience will be put to good use, although he is not in tomorrow's first team.
York: Ian Dews (captain), Nigel Durham (wicketkeeper), Greg How, Marcus Wood, Dan Copeland, Richard Musgrave, Simon Mason, Shaun Gorman, Nick Kay, James Pringle, Ben Quick.
Scarborough's skipper, Nick Tubbs is guarded about his side's prospects.
"We will be lucky to improve on last year's performance when we jumped from the bottom of the table to roughly half way." he saidScarborough have failed to retain many of the best cricketers from the area with the likes of the Gormley brothers - Dameon and Simon - at Yeadon in the Bradford League, Dave Greenlay at Thirsk and Neil Elvidge also in the Bradford League all illustrating a serious drain on the club's playing resources.
South African Brad Wigney takes over from last season's registered overseas player, Cameron Cuffy, and makes his debut against Hull at North Marine Road tomorrow.
Hull have signed an Indian all-rounder, Venkataramana from Bombay.
Scarborough: Nick Tubbs (captain), Mark Cowell, Darren Harland, Ian Philliskirk, Garry Jones, Graeme Wilson (wicketkeeper), Rob Harrison, Mark Wells, Brad Wigney, Chris Clark, Chris Clifford.
Harrogate skipper, John Proud has set his sights on winning the Yorkshire League for the third time in successive seasons.
Tomorrow he has to find a last minute replacement for all-rounder, Peter Hepworth, who has been struggling with a back injury.
Whatever the team, it will certainly have it's hands full when it face last season's runners-up, Doncaster Town, the National Club KO Cup holders, beat National Village KO champions, Methley in a novel pre-season challenge match played in front of an estimated crowd of 800 a fortnight ago.
Harrogate: John Proud (captain), Peter Hepworth, Paul Hampshire, Vic Craven, Jamie Stewart, Simon Kippax, Darren Wyrill, Ryan Bradshaw, Matthew Smart, Anthony Burton and Paddy Logan.
