In a free world R Westmoreland has a right to his anti-Jewish prejudices but he cannot be allowed to distort history (Letters, April 19).
In 1948 the State of Israel was set up by decision of the United Nations. Immediately this small nation of 500,000 people was attacked by ten million Arabs. For a second time David gave Goliath his just desserts and immediately the inhabitants of Palestine who were anti-Jewish fled like rats deserting a sinking ship. No one forced them to leave - they went willingly. In subsequent years terrorist attacks have been launched on Israel and she has retaliated.
No country "dared" to harbour these terrorists; they were there by right of might. Lebanon could not control them and they stayed.
Jordan drove them out at gunpoint. The Muslims who chose to stay in Israel were accepted as full citizens if they wished. So come off it Mr Westmoreland, there weren't millions to be "cleansed" in any case!
