My wife and I have just spent a most enjoyable four days in your delightful city - despite the weather.

One thing that impressed us, and other visitors to whom we spoke, was the almost complete absence of litter, so different from many other areas of our country.

Is this due to the citizens of York being particularly proud of their surroundings, or to the efforts of the council?

No doubt it is a combination of these, but we wish you would share the secret with the rest of the country.

The people of York should be very proud of this aspect of life in their community, just as much as of the history and beauty of their city.

We shall certainly be signing the praises of York for a long time.
