North Yorkshire County Council's new rating system for accident blackspots confirms what we have known for some time. The gaps on the A64 are among the most dangerous junctions in the county.
Taking into account severity of injuries suffered as well as the number of smashes, the authority places Colton Lane End at the top of the list, and Bilbrough Top in joint second place.
These results are based on accidents over the last three years. They offer proof beyond reasonable doubt that the gaps are too dangerous to be left open.
The Highways Authority will soon seal up Colton Lane End. At a stroke, the county's most notorious junction will be made safe. For the sake of all road users, Bilbrough gap should follow suit.
