It is disappointing that the plan for York's indoor tennis complex is not progressing more quickly. To most observers, the proposed Monks Cross centre would be an excellent addition to the city.
The complex would seem to be positioned in the perfect place - close to two other leisure facilities, Waterworld and Huntington Stadium. But city planners are not convinced.
In the Local Plan, the land is earmarked for "employment use". The council is right to make inward investment a priority. But the tennis centre, which would create 80 jobs, might be considered an additional attraction by employers looking to relocate.
Certainly without it, York's chances of producing the next Tim Henman are greatly reduced. The ball is squarely in the planners' court.
