He started his showbusiness career as a stage school tea boy. But his big break came soon afterwards when he landed the role of the Artful Dodger in the film of Oliver Twist.
Newley went on to become an accomplished actor, playwright, author, lyricist and singer.
He was as big a draw in Las Vegas as Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.
Both Martin and Sinatra have gone, and now Newley has too. His death marks the end of a very colourful era.
There will be a few people today who have found themselves humming Do You Mind, and smiled at the memory.
