KIEREN FALLON, who stole the show at Newmarket yesterday when completing a 395-1 treble, can again make his presence felt tomorrow on the final day of the Craven meeting.
The champion jockey teams-up with Ballet Master in the £20,000 Fielden Stakes, and this highly-rated colt is strongly fancied to come through this test with flying colours.
Winner of his only race last year as juvenile, at Yarmouth in the autumn, Ballet Master has been talked about in glowing terms at Henry Cecil's yard since, and has been working really well in preparation for this eagerly anticipated return to racing action.
A bold show tomorrow will earn Ballett Master a tilt at the 2,000 Guineas in a fortnight's time. He is confidently expected to confirm his Classic date.
Fallon can also get on the scoresheet aboard Agiotage, a lightly-raced, but progressive performer last season in the Swaffham Handicap, and aboard Candleriggs in the Blue Square Showcase Handicap.
The latter is owned by Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United FC manager, and ran out a cosy winner at Kempton's Easter meeting. He has more to do here, but the chances are that we have not seen the best of Candleriggs yet.
Newmarket's feature race is the £35,000 City Index Craven Stakes, in which Mujahid is taken to confirm his place as the 2,000 Guineas favourite.
John Dunlop's Danzig colt suffered only one defeat last season - in York's Gimcrack Stakes when he was rendered shin-sore on the firm ground - and ended the campaign by winning the hotly-contested Dewhurst Stakes.
Although he was 25-1 that day. Mujahid scored entirely on merit and following encouraging reports from the Dunlop stable, it seems that this cracking prospect has come through the winter in fine shape. He will be a tough nut to crack under Richard Hills. At Ripon, Jemima is napped to land the opening Sharow Maiden Stakes for Tim Easterby and Lindsay Charnock.
Twelve months ago, the same partnership won this race with Pipalong, and while it would be premature at this stage to forecast that Jemima will prove to be as good as Pipalong, this daughter of Owington has been shaping up very nicely indeed at home. A winning debut is anticipated.
Jim Goldie won the Newby Apprentice Handicap last year with Ballantrae Boy, and the Glasgow trainer can complete a double tomorrow with the speedy Johayro. The six-year-old, previously successful over this course and distance, turned in a very fair effort on his reappearance at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago.
Tomorrow's selections:
Newmarket: 2-05 Agiotage, 2-35 Ballet Master, 3-10 Mujahid, 3-45 Candleriggs, 4-15 Victory Spin, 4-45 Alfailak, 5-20 First Blood.
Ripon: 2-10 Jemima (nap), 2-45 Palacegate Jack, 3-20 Azzan, 3-50 Fantasy Hill, 4-25 Border Prince, 5-00 Johayro.
